Wood-fuelled heating systems, also called biomass systems, burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide warmth in a single room or to power central heating and hot water boilers.
A boiler burns logs, pellets or chips, and is connected to a central heating and hot water system. A wood-fuelled biomass boiler could save you up to £880 a year compared to electric heating.
- Low carbon compared to regular boilers
- Affordable heating
- Financial support through government incentives
- Locally sourced wood can be used
- Minimal pollution
The research investigates the opportunity of energy efficiency in buildings to achieve significant cost, energy and carbon reductions. We answer your questions, for example; how far would the UK get in meeting its climate change commitments if all homes had double-glazing, insulation, efficient boilers, well set heating programmes and thermostats? What type of incentives and disincentives need to be in place to encourage energy saving?
iMeasure was created to give people visible energy use feedback so they can make informed choices about how best to save energy in their home. What started as a small research project with dozen households submitting weekly meter readings is now an online tool used by thousands of households.
The energy data collected through iMeasure continues to support academic research to inform understanding of energy efficiency in buildings.
